The Bank of Namibia is the central bank of Namibia. It is the only institution permitted to issue the Namibian dollar by authority granted to it by the Namibian Parliament. The current governor of the institution is Tom Alweendo. The headquarters are located in Windhoek, but a branch exists in Oshakati.

History

Originally, the name of the central bank of Namibia was to be designated as the Namibia Reserve Bank. However, the plan of this, along with the proposed currency, the kalahar, were eventually dropped. In 1993, the bank was officially established and printed its first banknotes on September 15, 1993, and then its first coins in December. In 1997, Tom Alweendo succeeded Malaysian Jafaar bin Ahmad, becoming the first Namibian governor of the bank. Alweendo is still the incumbent.
