The 1 shilling coin is a former circulation piece of the Republic of Somaliland, a self-declared state internationally recognized as an autonomous region of Somalia. It was issued in a single type by the Bank of Somaliland in 1994, and manufactured under commission at the Pobjoy Mint, a private-sector mint in the United Kingdom.
The piece currently holds a legal tender face value of 1.00 Somaliland shilling in most areas claimed by Somaliland. However, inflation has virtually rendered the coin obsolete, and as a result, it no longer circulates frequently in the self-declared state. In addition, many citizens of Somaliland prefer to use the Somali shilling instead of Somaliland's currency as their primary medium of exchange.
The piece is composed of aluminum and measures 1.07 grams in mass, 20.5 millimeters in diameter, and 1.45 millimeters in thickness. It has medallic alignment and a reeded edge, and like most coins, is round in shape. Both of the coin's rims are raised and undecorated.
Displayed in the center of the obverse is a left-facing illustration of a Somali pigeon (Columba oliviae), a bird species endemic to northern Somalia, including areas claimed by Somaliland. The "PM" mark of the Pobjoy Mint is inscribed in small print below the bird's tail feathers, near the coin's rim. Printed at the coin's upper boundary, extending clockwise from the lower left to lower right peripheries, is the legend "REPUBLIC OF SOMALILAND". Written in the opposite direction at the bottom of the obverse is the Gregorian date of minting, "1994".
The piece's face value is represented twice on the reverse. In the coin's center, it is rendered in large print as "1/-", the slash and dash abbreviated for the word "shilling", as in traditional British contexts. The value is also written out as "ONE SOMALILAND SHILLING" below, traveling in a counterclockwise arc along the piece's lower periphery. The remainder of the rim at the top of the coin is occupied by the title of the Bank of Somaliland in Somali, "BAANKA SOMALILAND", which is engraved in a clockwise direction and separated from the written value by two small circular points, one at each side of the reverse.
The total mintage of the coin is currently unknown. Only business strikes of this particular type are known to have been produced.
