The 6.55957 franc coin was a commemorative coin minted by France from 1999 to 2001. It was originally minted to commemorate France joining the eurozone, though other coins followed. The strange denomination is derived from the exchange rate between the euro and franc, giving the coin a value equal to one euro.
Coins[]
The coins were composed of .900 fine silver. The first coin weighed 13 grams, though all the coins that came after weighed approximately 22.2 grams. Commonly depicted on the obverse of the coins was an allegory of Europa, often with the value and year of minting of the coin, though certain 2001 issues became exceptions. The reverse of each coin varied.
