Gabon, during its time as a territory of French Equatorial Africa, issued a series of five non-denominated token coins annually from 1925 to 1929. They were produced at the Poissy Mint in France. It is believed they were used for paying taxes, and that their values corresponded to the animals shown on the obverses.
History and description[]
French Gabon introduced its series of five non-denominated coins in 1925, the same year in which Middle Congo started its own series of similar pieces. Each of the five coins is composed of aluminum and has a mass of approximately 3 grams and a diameter of roughly 31 millimeters. All are round in shape and bear a circular hole in their centers. A different animal is featured on the obverse for each year the coins were produced, with the central hole cut over portions of the illustration. An elephant (Loxodonta) is shown for 1925, a leopard (Panthera pardus pardus) for 1926, an ox head for 1927, a pelican (Pelecanus) for 1928, and a rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) for 1929. Curved in a clockwise direction along the upper rim of the reverse, above the central hole, is the word "GABON", and written counterclockwise along the bottom periphery of the piece, below the hole, is the year of minting. The rims of both the obverse and reverse are raised and decorated with a dentillated border.
All five of the non-denominated coins are rare and appear at auctions every once in a while. Prices have often varied from about US$600 to US$3,500, depending on the coin's date, condition, and demand.
