The 2000 butut coin is a commemorative coin that was issued by the Republic of the Gambia in 1999, in commemoration of the conclusion of the 2nd millennium and the beginning of the 3rd. While it holds the status of legal tender, having a face value equivalent to 20.00 dalasi, it is primarily intended for collectors and not for general circulation. The piece was struck at the Royal Mint in Llantrisant, Wales, and issued by the Central Bank of The Gambia.

The coin is composed primarily of .925 fine silver (92.5% silver, 7.5% copper), but the main elements on both of its sides are also plated in gold. It has a mass of 28.28 grams, a diameter of 38.6 millimeters, and a thickness of 2.53 millimeters. The piece is decagonal in shape and has medallic alignment and a reeded edge. Displayed in the center of the obverse is the coat of arms of The Gambia – which consists of a crossed hoe and axe inside an escutcheon that is supported by two lions holding the tools displayed in the shield. Surmounting the escutcheon is a heraldic helmet and an oil palm (Elaeis guineensis), and present below the shield and the feet of the lions is a scroll bearing the national motto "PROGRESS PEACE PROSPERITY". Curved by the rim of the coin is the English state title "REPUBLIC OF THE GAMBIA", starting in an upwards direction at the left boundary, arching downward at the top, and concluding at the right periphery. The years "1999-2000" are printed at the very bottom of the coin, curved outwards towards the rim of the piece. Illustrated in the center of the reverse is a radiant depiction of the sun, superimposed by a map of The Gambia also showing the Gambia River in the center of the elongated country. The number "2000" is printed twice in the circle of the sun, once above the image of The Gambia and again, albeit inverted, under the same depiction. Written at the top of the obverse is the word "MILLENNIUM", arched upward. At the very bottom of the coin, the face value "2000 BUTUTS" is inscribed, flanked to the left and right by small bullet points.

A total mintage of only 30,000 examples of this coin was produced. All specimens were minted in proof quality.
