Gilroy Roberts was an American engraver who served as the ninth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint.
Biography[]
Roberts was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on March 11, 1905. During 1948, he became Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, which he kept the position of until 1964, when he became chairman of the Franklin Mint until 1971. Roberts died on January 26, 1992.
Roberts is perhaps most well known for designing the obverse of the Kennedy half dollar. As well as making designs for United States coins, he has also designed currency for the British Virgin Islands, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Greenland, Lebanon, and Uruguay.
