The drachma was the primary monetary unit of Greece from independence until the adoption of the euro. It was also the unit in a number of ancient Greek states.

The drachma was also the inspiration for the name dram used in Armenia and the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic and formerly in Armenian Kingdom of Cilicia, as well as the name dirham used in a number of Arabic-speaking countries.
