History and designs

The Republic of Latvia initially planned to adopt the euro at the beginning of 2008, but the adoption date was subsequently delayed several times for various reasons. In September 2012, the official target date for Latvia to adopt the euro was set for January 1, 2014. A tender for the minting of Latvian euro coins began on September 20, 2012, and on December 10 of the same year Latvia announced it would utilize the services of the Stuttgart Mint. The National Bank of Latvia officially publicized the Latvian euro designs in July 2006 on its homepage, following a national competition of ideas that took place in 2004. Euro coins of the country are expected to be issued as early as 2014.
Like every circulation 2 euro coin, Latvia's 2 euro coin will be bimetallic, having an outer ring composed of cupronickel and a center made of nickel-brass. It will weigh approximately 8.4 grams and measure 25.75 millimeters in diameter and 2.2 millimeters thick. "DIEVS* * * SVĒTĪ* * * LATVIJU* * *" (English: "God bless Latvia") is expected to be inscribed along the coin's edge. Rihards Zariņš' Latvian maiden, initially featured on 5 lats coins issued from 1929 to 1932, will be displayed in the nickel-brass center of the obverse, with the date inscribed to the left. Beginning to the right of the maiden and ending to the left is the title "REPUBLIKA LATVIJAS" (English: "Republic of Latvia"). Twelve five-pointed stars on the cupronickel ring encircle the center's content. The reverse will be identical to that of all 2 euro coins, featuring the value "2 EURO" superimposed on a map of the European continent in the coin's center, with twelve stars engraved above the continent in the outer ring.
