The 25 franken coin was a commemorative coin first minted by Liechtenstein during 1956. A new coin was later introduced in 1961. They had a face value of 25.00 franken.[1][2][3]
History[]
In 1956, the first 25 frank coin was issued by Liechtenstein. It was composed of .900 fine gold. The coin weighed 5.645 grams and had a diameter of 22 millimeters. It was engraved by Austrian artist, Edwin Grienauer. Displayed on the obverse were the effigies of Prince Franz Joseph II and Princess Gina with the year of minting and the inscription, "FRANZ JOSEF II UND GINA VON LIECHTENSTEIN". On the reverse was the coat of arms of Liechtenstein with the state title (FÜRSTENTUM LIECHTENSTEIN) and the value. A total of 17,000 of these coins were minted.[1]
During 1961, a new commemorative 25 frank coin was issued on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the National Bank of Liechtenstein. Like the previous coin, it was composed of .900 fine gold, had a mass of 5.645 grams, and a diameter of 22 millimeters. It was engraved by the Austrian artist, Ferdinand Welz. Shown on the obverse was an effigy of Prince Franz Joseph II along with the year of minting and the inscription, "FRANZ JOSEF II FÜRST VON LIECHTENSTEIN". Displayed on the reverse was the coat of arms of Liechtenstein with the state title and value. A total of 20,000 coins were minted.[2]
