A 50 lwei coin.
The lwei was a subunit of Angolan currency equivalent in value to 1⁄100 of the first Angolan kwanza. The following novo kwanza and kwanza reajustado were not divided into subunits, but with the introduction of the second kwanza in 1999, the lwei was replaced by the cêntimo.
The word is derived from the Lwei, a tributary of the Cuanza River. "Kwanza" comes from the name of the river itself.
