The 50 leu banknote was first printed by Moldova in 1992, but did not enter circulation until 1994. Since then, the note has been printed between 2002 and 2005 and is still found in circulation.
The note is predominantly pink in color, and measures 121 millimeters in width by 61 millimeters in height. On the obverse is an image of Stephen the Great, with a central rosette, the coat of arms of Moldova, and the logo of the National Bank of Moldova. Depicted on the reverse is the Hîrbovǎţ monastery with The Endless Column and Trajan's Column. For security, a security thread, translucent feature, and watermark were added to the note.
