During 1966, Communist Romania issued the first 50 lei banknote. The note was 145 millimeters in width by 72 millimeters in height. Its predominant color was green. The obverse of the note featured Romanian politician, Alexander John Cuza, the coat of arms of Communist Romania, and the value. Its reverse displayed the Palace of Culture in Iaşi as well as the value again. Both sides of the note were designed by the National Bank of Romania.

During 2005, Romania issued the 50 lei note again, using designs of the former 500,000 lei note, and putting it into proportion with the 50 euro note, due to Romania's planned adoption of the euro in 2014, being 140 millimeters by 77 millimeters. The obverse features Romanian engineer and aviator, Aurel Vlaicu, edelweiss, a propeller, and the value and year. The reverse displays a Vlaicu II airplane, an airplane motor, the head of an eagle, and the value. Both sides were designed by the National Bank of Romania. For security, the note was printed on polymer, and had a watermark, security thread, transparent window, microprinting, blacklight printing, micro perforations, and latent writing added to it.
