The 1 dinar coin is a former circulation piece of the Republic of Sudan, issued in a single type in 1994. Prior to its eventual demonetization in 2007, the coin carried a legal tender face value equivalent to 1.00 Sudanese dinar in its country of origin. It was distributed by the Bank of Sudan (later the Central Bank of Sudan).
The piece is composed of brass, weighs approximately 5.45 grams, and measures 22 millimeters in diameter and 1.85 millimeters in thickness. It has medallic alignment and a plain edge, and like most coins, is round in shape. The rims of both the obverse and reverse are raised. The obverse rim is decorated with a border consisting of rectangles of alternating sizes, and that of the reverse is ornamented with a simple beaded boundary.
The designs of the coin strongly resemble those of the 1989 Sudanese 1 pound coin, although they are not as sharply struck. Displayed in the center of the obverse is the former headquarters of the Bank of Sudan, with the Arabic title of the facility, "بنك السودان" (Romanized: Bānik as-Sūdān), written horizontally below in a kufic-like style. A large shaded numeral "١" (1), representing the coin's face value, appears at the middle right on the reverse. Inscribed on two lines to the left is the full value, which is written in Arabic as "واحد دينار" (wāḥida dinār), and translates to English as "one dinar". The Arabic state title of the Republic of Sudan, "جمهورية السودان" (Jumhūrīyat as-Sūdān), appears above the indications of the value, extending in a counterclockwise direction from the upper right to left peripheries of the piece. Arched along the lower rim of the piece, below the values, is the Islamic Hijri date "١٤١٥" (1415). It is followed by a letter "هـ" (hāʾ), abbreviated for "هجرية" (Hijrīyyah), a word used in the Arabic language to identify years in the Islamic calendar. Next to it is the Gregorian date "١٩٩٤" (1994), which is followed by a "مـ" (mīm) for "ميلادية" (Romanized: Mīlādīyyah). Such a word is sometimes appended to dates in Arabic to denote the Gregorian calendar. On the piece, the two dates are separated by a small horizontal line.
The total mintage of the 1 dinar coin is currently unknown. Only business strikes were reported to have been produced.
