The Zamunda pound is the currency of the fictitious Kingdom of Zamunda from the 1988 Paramount Pictures film, Coming to America. Coins and banknotes of the fictional currency were made in 1988 to promote the film. The coins eventually became listed in Krause's Unusual World Coins under a section entitled "Zamunda".
History[]
In contract with the Continental Coin Corporation, Paramount Pictures had 5 pound coins of Zamunda struck in cupronickel, brass-plated cupronickel, cupronickel gilt, and gold. The cupronickel coins were given to members of the public at the film's California premier in 1988, while the only gold example was used as a prop for the movie and later presented to Eddie Murphy, who wrote the story for film and played its main character, Prince Akeem Joffer of Zamunda. One hundred-pound notes were also printed to be used as props for the film, and have since been sold to collectors via the internet.
